In 1960, Harley-Davidson bought 50% of the shares of the Italian Aermacchi. This to be able to offer the lighter segment of mopeds and motorcycles. In 1972 they bought the company completely to sell it in 1975 to Cagiva. The models were renamed Aermacchi-Harley-Davidson but the models for the American market remained Harley-Davidson.
